Dani Barker

At the conclusion of the season, Obermiller reports that senior Dani Barker wins the "Tiger Heart Award" for the women's team.  Last year Dani was diagnosed with a heart condition.  This had plagued her training the past two seasons and made it difficult to impossible to compete.  This past summer she underwent surgery to repair the whole in her heart.  After extensive rehabilitation and limited training time, Dani swam, according to coach Max Obermiller, “one of the most courageous races I’ve ever witnessed.”  Dani competed in one of swimming’s toughest races, the 200 butterfly.  Her runner- up finish in the consolation final was a testimony to her tenacity and courage.

Reflections on Goals

Goals for swimmers are different from those of "normal" people.  Swimmers strive for goals that sometimes they will never reach.  Sometimes these goals are only known to them.  Mainly they are time benchmarks they wish to reach or breach.  Seldom are they about winning a particular race or beating a particular swimmer.  Since they are internal, the achievement of a goal, set in this way, is a very personal and gratifying thing.  When a goal is reached, a new goal almost automatically materializes.  And so the cycle continues as long as a swimmer can swim.  There is more satisfaction from achieving a goal, or reaching personal best in striving for a goal, than any medal or victory ever won.

A Sewanee swimmer told another Sewanee swimmer, that even if he knew he would break his leg and not be able to swim in the conference meet, he would still go through all the hard work and practice!  We all love conference.  Why?  One reason may be because it brings out the best in each swimmer.  All the fanfare and hype and team bonding make each swimmer go faster than they could without it.  And with this kind of meet, each swimmers goals come closer to being realized.  As personal best are set, and bodies are torn down for the sake of the team, how you stand in comparison to other swimmers is just not that important.  What is important, is how you stand up to your own standard... the one you set for yourself.

As an interested observer, I can say this for sure.  You each can be very proud of who you are, and how you swam.  Keep making goals and keep making personal best while not quite reaching those goals.  You have the respect, support, and love of those around you, especially your teammates.
