MAX OBERMILLER is in his 11th year as
swimming and diving coach at the University of the
South, with a dual meet record of 152-58 prior to
the 2004-05 seasons.
His overall college record is 257-88.
During his Sewanee tenure, his teams have set all
42 school swimming and diving records, while the
1999 team set records for wins (women, 14; men, 12)
and won the 1999 SCAC women's title.
In addition, Obermiller's teams have earned
national academic honors for 17 consecutive
semesters.
Highest National Finish: At the
2000 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship, the
Sewanee men's and women's teams recorded their
highest finish ever. The men finished 24th in the
nation, led by All-American diver Jon
Morris' second place finish in the 3m
diving and third in the 1m diving.
The women placed 34th and boasted their first
ever All-American in JH Chapman
(6th in the 200 freestyle). Since 1997, Sewanee has
had 10 All-American finishes at Nationals.
Obermiller has coached five athletes who have won
nine SCAC Athletes of the Year Awards.

Obermiller was voted the 1999 SCAC Women's Coach
of the Year.
A native of Grinnell, Iowa, Obermiller earned his
bachelor's degree in psychology from Beloit College
(Wisc.) in 1979. He earned his master's in exercise
and sports science from East Carolina in 1989.
Obermiller lives in Sewanee, Tenn. and has three
children: Erik, 20, Rachel, 18, and Anna, 14.
